Good day, explorers!
Today we are going to talk about a curiosity.
Many people while visiting Madrid, Spain only visit the Museo del Prado, which is a must, by the way. But let’s not forget that there are many hidden jewels outside the popular spots. One of these jewels is inside the Naval Museum of Madrid, a museum originally opened in 1832 that features antique items from the Spanish Navy since the 1500s(Catholic Monarch era), until now.
Probably the most interesting finding that is held at the Museum is the oldest world map that includes the Americas. This map was created right after the trip to the northern coasts of South America with Ojeda and Vespucci, in 1500 by Juan de la Cosa, who was also present when the First voyages by Colombus took place 6 years earlier. The map shows everything that was discovered on the trip, making it the oldest and more accurate map of its time.
Visit info for the Museum: here.
That is so interesting! I love Madrid so I’ll be returning and I’ll want to visit this museum.

The history of these maps, like the Waldseemuller map, is fascinating. For a deeper dive, I highly recommend a book titled The Fourth Part of the World.

Mthanks for the like of Spearwoo AUdventure. Your post reminds of my parents getting lost in Madrid in 1970s and stumbling upon some military museum. It left a lasting impression on my father the quantity of armaments going back centuries. Cheers
